Sustainable Marine
Sustainable Marine is a leading marine renewables solutions provider. Founded in 2012, it delivers a complete turnkey solution for marine energy projects including site evaluation, design, engineering, operation and maintenance services.
The company also specialises in low-environmental impact, floating tidal energy technology for island and coastal areas. Its next generation PLAT-I (PLATform for Inshore energy) system offers a clean alternative to diesel and coal, empowering local communities to decarbonise, protect coastlines and livelihoods while driving greater energy resilience. The innovative, smaller-scale, modular design is the first of its kind in the world, allowing developers to easily assemble on site and increase projects in controlled stages, creating larger arrays.
The PLAT-I system is underpinned by German engineering expertise through partner SCHOTTEL Hydro. It incorporates SCHOTTEL SIT250 turbines, mounted on SIT Deployment Modules (SDMs) allowing rapid elevation for inspection and maintenance. Requiring just two meters of water for launching and towing, the platform is moored with a turret configuration to align with the tide or river flow.
Sustainable Marine’s expertise further extends to anchors and mooring systems through its Swift Anchors division with a broad portfolio of novel solutions, driving carbon and cost savings while rapidly speeding up and simplifying deployments.
The Pempa’q Tidal Energy Project
Sustainable Marine is working to deliver the world’s first floating tidal energy array in Nova Scotia, Canada. The Pempa’q Project takes its name from the Mi’kmaq First Nation word ‘Pempa’q’ meaning ‘rise of the tide’, in honour of the Bay of Fundy’s Indigenous communities.
The project will be delivered in multiple phases to provide up to 9MW of clean predictable energy to Nova Scotia’s grid – reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 17,000tonnes of CO2 per year and powering approximately 3,000 homes.
The first phase began in 2021 with the deployment of the next generation PLAT-I 6.40 device, which is currently in the Grand Passage for commissioning and testing before relocation to Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE), experiencing amongst the highest tides on earth.
