09 March 2015. Nova Innovation have joined Ocean Energy Europe – the EU industry group for ocean renewable energy – as its newest member. The move comes on the same day as the Scottish tidal stream developer announces the first delivery of power from the Shetland Tidal Array project to the grid, following the installation of the first of three 100kw turbines. The development adds further momentum to the tidal stream sector, which is having a break-out year in 2016 with many key deployments across Europe.

“We are very happy to welcome Nova Innovation as the newest member of Ocean Energy Europe. The first export of power from the Shetland Tidal Array project is a major success for Nova and its European partners, and represents another win for Europe’s ocean energy sector. Tidal stream is having a real ‘break-out’ year in, with flagship deployments due in Scotland and France: we are witnessing the birth of an industry”, said Ocean Energy Europe CEO, Rémi Gruet.

The Shetland Tidal Array is a joint enterprise between Nova Innovation (Scotland) and ELSA (Belgium). Phase 1 of the array consists of three 100 kW Nova M100 turbines, with more turbines planned in following phases.

Simon Forrest, Managing Director of Nova Innovation, said: “This milestone represents a huge achievement, and the culmination of a tremendous amount of work from our team in Scotland and Belgium. I would especially like to thank Scottish Enterprise and ELSA for their support and advice which has enabled us to build such a strong, pan-European project rooted in Scotland.”
